Yoga
For Your Information
Yoga is great for reducing stress, increasing flexibility, and improving your overall health. But can yoga help you get in shape? Absolutely! Getting in shape means losing weight, improving muscle tone and strength, and feeling fitter and healthier. Although there are many types of yoga, most fall into two categories:
1. Raises your heart-rate by incorporating vigorous movement from one pose to the next.
2. Poses are practiced one at a time with rest in between.
Overall any kind of yoga, when practiced regularly, will improve your strength, flexibility, and muscle tone.
Iyengar Yoga
Created by B.K.S. Iyengar is a form of yoga known for its use of props, such as belts and blocks as aids in performing asanas (postures). A form of Hatha Yoga, it focuses on the structural alignment of the physical body through the development of a system of asanas, it aims to unite the body, mind and spirit for health and well-being. Each Asana or posture is an exercise, a meditation, a connection to energy flow, and a self-diagnostic instrument.
Vinyasa Yoga
The word Vinyasa means “breath-synchronized movement.” In other words, the teacher will instruct you to move from one pose to the next on an inhale or an exhale. This technique is sometimes also called Vinyasa Flow, or just Flow because of the smooth way that the poses run together and become like a dance. This style allows for a lot of variety, but will almost certainly include Sun Salutations. Expect heart-rate movement, not just stretching.
Hatha Yoga
Hatha yoga class combines Hatha Yoga practice with modern fitness movements and safety guidelines. This is a “non-purist” yoga developed for the fitness community. The class feature strength, cardiovascular conditioning and flexibility components in an active flowing style that also coordinates breathing with the movement. Proper body alignment and modifications offered allow each student to feel challenged yet successful.
